Why should you add Polignano a Mare in Puglia to your Italy Itinerary?
I could say visit to make your eyes and spirit happy or to snap some fantastic photos to show off to your friends.
For me, it’s all about the incredible combination of timeless charm and stunning scenery, with its dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters – seriously awesome! 🤩✨

In fact, Polignano a Mare was named the Most Welcoming City In The World by Booking.com in 2023. It received this honor in the Traveller Review Awards, all thanks to its outstanding hospitality.
This award really speaks volumes about the town’s commitment to making everyone feel at home, really showing the essence of the warm Italian hospitality that I love.

13 Essential Things to Do in Polignano
The main attraction of Polignano a Mare is undoubtedly its stunning views! The town’s breathtaking seaside panoramas are a highlight for any visitor.
But there’s much more to this charming destination than just its scenic beauty. Let’s check it out! 😎🔍
1 – Enjoy the ‘Special Coffee‘ At The Super Mago del Gelo Mario Campanella
Start your visit to Polignano on the right note by stopping by Il Super Mago del Gelo Mario Campanella and ordering the Caffè Speciale.
This is a century-old bar with a lot of history, as many great artists and celebrities such as the Polignano-born Domenico Modugno, have hung out there.
The bar is sort of quirky and very welcoming, with lots of interesting photos and memorabilia covering the walls.

Its signature coffee, the Special Coffee, really surprised me, as I wasn’t expecting to like it. It’s made with coffee, cream, lemon zest, sugar and house-made amaretto and served warm. It is to die for, you should definitely try it!
Besides their amazing coffee, Il Super Mago del Gelo is a haven for granita lovers (like myself! 😋). They offer this icy fruit slushy delight made with fresh seasonal fruits – just the perfect refreshing treat during the summer!
Whenever we visit Polignano, we can’t resist stopping by on our way in and out of the historic center, as the bar is located just across the city’s main gate, Arco Marchesale (or Porta Grande) – it’s that good! ☕
2 – Pass through Arco Marchesale (Porta Grande)
L’Arco Marchesale, also known as Porta Grande, is a standout historic feature in Polignano a Mare, dating back to around 1530. This gateway was the only access point to the old town until 1780 and played a key role in the town’s defense.
When you see the arch, you’ll notice its distinctive design. The main facade features two semi-columns on pedestals flanking the single archway, topped with a loggia and a shapely parapet.
It’s a beautiful blend of function and design from centuries ago, adding a special touch to the town’s character.

Back in the day, Arco Marchesale had a drawbridge, which allowed access to the town by crossing a moat (which is now where Piazza Garibaldi sits). Today, this arch is a piece of history and a real architectural monument.
Inside, there’s this barrel vault with a painting of the Crucifixion of Christ from way back in the late 16th century. No one knows who painted it, but it’s pretty amazing to see.
Plus, there’s a little religious building right on top of the arch. It was built in the mid-16th century and later became known as the Confraternity of St. Joseph after some 18th-century renovations.
3 – Explore the Enchanting Polignano’s Old Town
Wandering through Polignano’s old town is a breeze – perfectly sized for a relaxed stroll. You will be walking through streets that once were guarded by a moat and defensive walls. Even now, bits and pieces of its fortified history peek through the narrow streets.
And when you step through the Arco Marchesale, you’re welcomed into the quaint Piazzetta Fulvia Miani Perotti. Here, the old feudal lords’ home is now the elegant Valentini Counts’ Palazzo. Together with the Palazzo del Governatore, they show the town’s past glories and lead you to lively squares.
Plus, right around the corner, you’ll come across the remnants of the Gogna, a fascinating relic from the days of public shaming.
And don’t miss out on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, just a short walk from the city gate. This main square is always buzzing with life, lined with cafes, and dominated by the grand Palazzo dell’ Orologio. It’s the perfect spot to soak in the vibe of Polignano, with a coffee in hand, of course!
After you check out the church, Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria Assunta, take a left and get ready for some amazing sea views from the terraces – definitely worth a look! Then, swing right onto Via San Benedetto, where you’ll find a charming mix of small shops and bars, all set against a pretty scenic backdrop.
Keep going that way, and you’ll find even more cliffs with stunning vistas of the Adriatic Sea. It’s like every turn is a new postcard-worthy scene!
4 – Join a Catamaran Tour and Brace Yourself for Unforgettable Views
The Polignano a Mare: Catamaran Tour with Aperitif & Local Food cruises for 2.5 hours along the Apulian coast. You get to see the gorgeous coastline from a whole new angle, taste some local Apulian aperitifs, take a dip in crystal-clear waters, and even try paddleboarding if you’re up for it. It’s the perfect combo of unwinding, soaking in the culture, and a dash of adventure, all aboard a catamaran on the breathtaking Adriatic Sea. 🛥️🍹
5 – Hop on a Boat Tour To Discover Polignano’s Amazing Grottoes and Coves
The Small Group Boat Excursion to Polignano a Mare is a 1.5-hour tour where you get to explore some of Polignano’s most incredible grottoes and coves only accessible by sea, like Grotta Azzurra and Grotta Piana. You can dive into the turquoise waters of the Adriatic to swim or snorkel – you’re all set for a mini adventure with snorkeling gear and alcoholic drinks. 🚤🏖️
6 – Photo Opportunity: Tour all Breathtaking Cliff Viewpoints
You cannot go too far walking around in Polignano without seeing a stunning cliff view. I’ve narrowed down my top 5 spots:
Belvedere su Lama Monachile
This spot is the absolute winner! Definitely start here – you won’t regret it. The view over Lama Monachile is just spectacular, and that beach is something else! 😍📸
Pietra Piatta
Now, this spot offers the best view from the other side of Lama Monachile. You’ve got to see it!
Terazza Santo Stefano
This is a real treat – you get to see Pietra Piatta on the left and the beautiful outline of Polignano on the right, a two-for-one in scenic views!
Mirador Blue
You’ll love this view – on your left, there’s the well-known Grotta Palazzese restaurant, and to the right, gorgeous sea views that just don’t quit!

Ponte Borbonico
Check out this spot for a fresh view of the Lama Monachile beach.

7 – Experience the Thrills of Red Bull Cliff Diving World
For the brave of heart, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series is an adrenaline-pumping event that combines sheer athleticism with daredevil bravery.
In 2023, it was held on July 2nd in Polignano, and the 2024 calendar is still not available. This competition showcases elite cliff divers from around the globe who leap from heights of up to 27 meters, executing intricate acrobatics before hitting the water.
Just remember Molly Carson’s dive in 2022 – incredibly impressive!
8 – Step Inside the Church of Saint Mary of The Assumption
The Chiesa Matrice Santa Maria Assunta, or the Church of Saint Mary of Assumption, is a place where devotion meets art. Originally consecrated to Santa Maria Assunta in 1295, this site has a rich history, having been built where a pagan temple once stood.
Over the centuries, the church has seen numerous modifications, now presenting a fascinating blend of Romanesque-Pugliese style with elements of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque.
The presbytery of the church is dominated by an 18th-century high altar, and right behind it is this striking 17th-century painting. Also, be sure to check out the choir and the Chapel of San Vito, dedicated to the city’s patron saint.
9 – Taste the Real Puglia with a Local Food Tour
Join the Polignano a Mare: Street Food Tour with Tastings and Wine for a delicious 2.5-hour adventure. You’ll get to try everything from the unique caffè speciale, crispy focaccia and panzerotto, to creamy burrata and savory capocollo, all washed down with some regional wine. As you walk through the city, you’ll savor the food while soaking in panoramic views and getting a slice of local culture and history. It’s a perfect blend of traditional Apulian cuisine and storytelling, making for an unforgettable journey through local tastes and tales.
10 – Take a Trip Back in Time at the Roman Bridge
Besides being this pretty spot near Lama Monachile beach, the Roman bridge in Polignano a Mare was part of the Via Traiana, an ancient Roman road built way back in 109 AD by none other than Emperor Trajan.
This road was an important route in the Roman Empire, connecting major cities. Starting from Benevento, a key crossroads back then (it even connected to the famous Via Appia!), it stretched all the way to Brindisi, a major port on the Adriatic coast. The Via Traiana was built as a more direct route from Rome to Brindisi, making it a quicker route than the older Via Appia.
11 – Say Hello To Domenico Modugno
The legendary singer-songwriter Domenico Modugno, the voice behind the world-famous tune ‘Nel blu, dipinto di blu’ or as most of us know it, Volare, is Polignano a Mare’s pride and joy. And he’s got his very own statue in town, striking his iconic pose.

Right above the steps named after Modugno, which lead down to Spiaggia Domenico Modugno, there’s a statue that really captures how much Polignano a Mare cherishes him. The town is really proud of its famous local, and honors his art by blending it with its beautiful scenery, creating a perfect mix of culture and nature.
12 – Dive into Modern Art at Pino Pascali Museum
Right at the southern end of the seafront, you’ll find the Museo di Arte Contemporanea Pino Pascali. Since 2012, this spot, once a municipal slaughterhouse, has become the only permanent museum of Contemporary Art in Puglia.
It houses a permanent collection of Pino Pascali’s works, along with other temporary exhibitions. Check their website for the latest information.
As for Pino Pascali himself, he’s known as the 20th century’s top Apulian artist. Born in Bari, Pascali made a significant impact in the art world, particularly with his appearance at the 1968 Venice Biennale.
His life ended tragically and abruptly at 33 in a motorcycle accident. He was a versatile artist, uniquely blending Mediterranean culture with playful, adventurous elements in his work.
13 – Find Poetry Around Every Corner in Polignano
If you notice poems written all over the place in Polignano, that’s the handiwork of Guido ‘il Flâneur’ Lupori. Originally from Bari and a Polignano resident since ’84, Guido prefers to share his poetry on the streets rather than in books.

Since 1992, he’s been turning Polignano a Mare into an open-air gallery, where the town’s beauty meets the depth of his words. His unique style really shows how powerful words can be, especially when they’re part of the scenery. Keep your eyes open – you never know where his next poem will pop up!
Polignano a Mare’s Gorgeous Beaches
The Famous Lama Monachile Beach
Start your beach adventure at the famous Lama Monachile Beach, also known as Cala Porto. This star attraction in Polignano a Mare is a cozy little beach nestled between towering cliffs. The view is simply stunning – with pebbly shores (remember your sandals!) and crystal-clear blue waters.

Though it’s on the smaller side, this beach really comes alive in the summer. It turns into this buzzing spot where both locals and tourists love to hang out. It’s the perfect place to feel the real vibe of Polignano a Mare!
Ponte dei Lapilli beach
Spiaggia di Ponte dei Lapilli, with its pebbly shore and crystal-clear waters, is a quiet escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. It’s perfect if you’re after a more natural vibe. The beach sits cozily under a bridge, giving you both shade and a unique setting to relax in.
Getting there is a bit of an adventure – you’ll descend a cliff section, but it’s totally worth it. And here’s the best part: it’s just a short walk from the city and has free parking. So, if you’re looking to dodge the usual beach crowds, this is your go-to spot.
Porto Cavallo
Just 3 km from the heart of Polignano a Mare, Porto Cavallo Beach is your perfect getaway from the busy tourist areas. It’s got a bit of everything: a cozy sandy spot for sun lovers and rocky areas for the explorers among us. The beach is great for families too, thanks to the shallow, sandy seabed near the shore. And for those who love a bit more adventure, the deeper waters are just right for various water activities.
Its calm waters, protected from the wind, and the stunning scenery that surrounds it, make it a hit with the locals, especially families. And get this – the beach got its name from a time back in the early 20th century when locals would bring their horses here for a wash. Pretty cool, right?
San Vito
The Abbazia di San Vito, dating all the way back to the 10th century, is a historic Benedictine abbey right near this charming small port. Over the centuries, it’s been enriched with some Baroque details and remains a significant architectural attraction. Full of stories and legends, it’s right on the ancient Via Traiana. While it’s not always open to the public, you can step inside during Sunday Mass or for special occasions.
The whole complex has a church, fortified walls with towers, and a loggia with an awesome sea view. It’s not far from downtown Polignano, just a 3 km trip.
And while you’re around, make sure to swing by the San Vito beach nearby. It’s got this picturesque vibe with an elegant structure overlooking a cozy little harbor.
What to Eat in Polignano a Mare
Il Crudo di Mare
Get ready for a seafood feast! You’ll find a spread of raw seafood like different types of fresh fish, sea urchins (known locally as Ricci di Mare), red and purple shrimp, and tasty scampi. Known for being super fresh, it’s a seafood lover’s dream.
Riso Patate e Cozze (La Tiella Barese)
It’s a unique dish made with layers of mussels, potatoes, and rice seasoned with onions, tomatoes, salt, pepper, and a touch of pecorino cheese, then baked to perfection. This one’s all about bringing those fresh, real flavors together.
La Focaccia di Polignano
Sure, Bari’s focaccia gets all the fame, but Polignano’s version is equally delightful. It’s known for being soft and super flavorful. Definitely worth a try!
Where to Eat in Polignano a Mare
Ristorante Grotta Palazzese
The Ristorante Grotta Palazzese is all about its stunning location inside a natural cave that opens right onto the Adriatic Sea. It’s an extraordinary, almost magical dining experience, with an atmosphere that’s truly one-of-a-kind! Here, what really takes your breath away are the mesmerizing sea views.
Just a heads-up, though – such a unique setting does come with a price tag. On the menu, you’ll find tempting options like Cacio e Pepe Ravioli with Prawns and Caviar, Sea Bass with Turnip Tops and Chard, and Espresso Martini Tiramisu for dessert.
La Locanda Porta Picc
Right in the heart of Polignano a Mare, La Locanda Porta Picc brings together the best of traditional Italian, seafood, and Mediterranean dishes, all with a modern twist. The vibe is totally cozy and great for families.
Their menu gets it just right with both set menus and a la carte choices that offer great value for your money, especially in a place like Polignano a Mare. The last time I went there with my family, we went for the Menu Degustazione Pesce, and it was a hit! 😋
Standouts were the Spaghettoni con Cozze e Pomodoro Fresco (Spaghetti with Mussels and Fresh Tomato) and Frittura Mista (Mixed Fried Seafood) – absolutely delicious. And the desserts, the Panna Cotta and Tiramisu, were quite a treat too.
Mint Cucina Fresca
Mint Cucina Fresca is all about serving up healthy and creative dishes. They really focus on using organic, seasonal produce right from Puglia. What’s cool is that they step away from the usual pasta and meat dishes. Instead, they whip up nutritionally balanced meals with a global twist.
It’s not just the food that’s unique – the place has this cozy, cave-like vibe that adds to the experience. Definitely a spot for food lovers to check out. And if you’re going, their tuna dishes and vegetarian options come highly recommended.

Summer’s great, but it does get really busy and pretty hot. Going in those shoulder seasons – May or September – you’ll dodge the big crowds, making your trip a lot more laid-back.

Getting the Pronunciation Right: Polignano a Mare
I get that the ‘gn’ sound in ‘Polignano’ can be a bit tricky if it’s not in your native language. So, take a moment to learn the Italian way to say it and make a ‘Bella Figura’ with the locals! 😉
