Vieste, Foresta Umbra and the rest of Gargano region are frequently missed by tourists visiting Puglia, Italy, and it’s really a shame.
The logistics here might be a bit tricky, and it’s not the most visited area in Puglia—that title probably goes to Salento, with its Baroque city of Lecce (I live there, btw 😉) and stunning beaches, as well as the Valle d’Itria, home to Alberobello and Ostuni.
But let me tell you, Vieste and Foresta Umbra – and the entire Gargano for that matter – have so much to offer that I really recommend you include them in your next trip to southern Italy. It’s absolutely worth it!
Vieste itself is a vibrant seaside town that just oozes life. It’s one of those places that grabs you right from the beginning, with a charming historic center, narrow streets filled with amazing spots, and beautiful beaches just waiting for you to discover.
And let’s talk about Foresta Umbra. This UNESCO-recognized site in Puglia’s Gargano National Park is a dense ancient forest teeming with unique wildlife and mysterious trails—it’s pure magic, I tell you!

Vieste is energetic, and simply bursting with life! You’ll catch that vibe right away as you start exploring.
As you wander through the historic center, the narrow streets buzz with a thrilling energy. Locals chat excitedly, creating a vibrant scene that’s simply contagious.
The upbeat mood will lift your spirits and leave you wanting to enjoy every bit of this lovely city.
While you’re exploring Vieste’s historic center, make sure to check out the area around Vieste Castle. It’s right in the heart of the town, giving you a real feel for the city’s rich history and some spectacular views.
History Box – Vieste
Vieste is located on Italy’s Adriatic coast and has a history that stretches back through the ages. Its excellent coastal location has always made it a hotspot, attracting Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Normans, all of whom have fought to claim it over the centuries.
The town’s narrow streets and traditional white buildings reflect these varied historical influences. The Norman period, in particular, left a lasting impact with the robust castle that still dominates the skyline today.
In the Middle Ages, Vieste went through some tough times, with the raid by Dragut being one of the most harrowing events. However, the town’s history isn’t just about conflict.
It’s also a story of faith, as seen in the imposing Cathedral of Vieste. Despite earthquakes and numerous rebuilds, the cathedral has remained a central part of the community.
Vieste’s ability to bounce back and thrive is impressive, turning from a historic battleground into a peaceful and scenic spot.
As you wander through Vieste’s historic streets today, you can find the layers of its rich history.
The Castello Svevo, first built in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 13th, resisted many invasions and conflicts. It’s a true symbol of Vieste’s resilience over the years.
Sadly, you can’t go inside the castle at the moment, but even from the outside, it’s quite a sight.
Not far from there, you’ll come across the Cathedral of Vieste, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. Also dating back to the 11th century, this Cathedral is a fine example of remarkable Romanesque architecture.
The Cathedral has survived earthquakes and rebuilds, still standing strong today as a symbol of the town’s enduring spirit and deep spirituality.
On the lighter side, don’t forget to take a photo at the Scalinata dell’Amore, or ‘Stairway of Love’. These charming steps are a hit on Instagram and offer stunning panoramic views of the town and sea.
It’s a favorite spot for couples and anyone looking to capture that picture-perfect memory of Vieste.
2. Gelateria Maggiore – The Best Ice Cream And Granita In Town
Right at the foot of the Scalinata dell’Amore, you’ll find my favorite gelateria, Gelateria Maggiore.
Interestingly enough, there are actually two in town, both owned by the same family but run as independent businesses.
Both spots offer delicious flavors of ice cream and life-saving granitas that are perfect for the summer heat.
My personal favorites? Almond and coconut! 🍦
3. Pizzomunno Beach
Spiaggia del Pizzomunno, also known as Castle Beach, is the most popular beach in Vieste. It’s famous for its dramatic limestone monolith, Pizzomunno, that watches over the shore.
This wide, sandy beach is a hit with both sun-seekers and families, thanks to its shallow, crystal-clear waters that are just right for a swim. Whether you’re up for some action with a fun game of beach volleyball, or just looking for a relaxed day under the sun, this beach offers a little something for everyone!
There’s even a bit of a romantic tale tied to this place. It’s about Pizzomunno, a fisherman frozen in time, forever searching for his lost love, Cristalda. Mysterious, right?
Getting here is super easy, and with all the amenities you could want, it’s the perfect hub for summer fun and a perfect starting point for boat tours that explore the stunning sea caves nearby.
For water sports fans, you’re in for a treat! Spiaggia del Pizzomunno is fantastic for windsurfing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, and you can easily rent equipment right on the beach.
And you absolutely can’t miss the chance for some moonlit photography—it’s nothing short of magical! 🌙
4. Chalet Degli Ulivi – Great Pizzas In A Charming Setting
There are plenty of great places to eat in and around Vieste, but one spot I really loved was Chalet Degli Ulive, up the hill from Castle Beach. It’s a bit of a drive and you’ll definitely need to book in advance, but believe me, it’s totally worth it!
The setting alone is something special—among olive and fig trees, it’s the perfect peaceful spot for enjoying some fantastic food.
5. Foresta Umbra – The Magic Ancient Forest
I just love exploring Foresta Umbra, right in the heart of Gargano National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is rich in extraordinary natural beauty and historical significance.
With about 10,000 hectares of stunning ancient beech forests, is key to preserving the area’s diverse ecosystem.
The Foresta Umbra’s flora is truly impressive, with more than 2,000 plant species that have earned it the nickname “botanical garden”. The forest’s varying elevations separate it into distinct zones, each featuring its own unique mix of vegetation.
The Umbra Forest is famous for its amazing collection of more than 65 wild orchid species. From April to late May, these orchids burst into vibrant flowers, drawing in plant lovers and tourists from all over with their stunning sights.
The wildlife scene here is just as impressive, with a mix of rare and common species. Nature enthusiasts rejoice – you might spot the native Italian roe deer of Gargano, wild cats, boars, and a great variety of birds that’ll really impress you – basically, a wildlife sanctuary!
Feeling adventurous? Foresta Umbra’s got over 100 km of marked trails wind through the forest, perfect for hiking, mountain biking, or a casual stroll.
They even have accessible paths for wheelchairs and baby carriages near the beautiful Laghetto d’Umbra. So lace up your boots (or grab your wheels), and get ready to explore!
The forest is a perfect spot for picnics, with designated picnic areas scattered around, perfect for a pitstop amidst the lush greenery.
Plus, if you’re up for something special, there’s Trattoria Foresta Umbra right there in the forest. My husband and I had some amazing food last time – highly recommend!
Where To Stay In The Vieste Area
If you’re looking for a place to stay, you’ve got plenty of options to choose from in and around Vieste, no matter what your budget or style is.
If you want to be right in the middle of all the action, I’d recommend checking out B&B In Centro.
However, if you’re looking for a relaxing spot just 10 minutes from Vieste and right near the gorgeous Foresta Umbra, Shanti is an excellent pick!
The family that runs it and their staff are super friendly, and the homemade breakfast is absolutely delicious!

Practical Information
If you’re planning a trip to Vieste—or anywhere in the Gargano region, for that matter—in spring or summer, it’s important to think about logistics and how strong the sun can get.
I strongly suggest you travel by car to make the most of your trip. Just a heads-up, though—navigating and finding parking might be a bit tricky.
The roads around here are typically narrow and winding, which means you’ll need to stay sharp while driving. Plus, don’t rely too heavily on Google Maps or Waze as they sometimes get a bit confused in this area.
Although parking can be a bit of a tight squeeze, with some smart planning, you should manage just fine.
how to get there from Bari
By Car
Driving is definitely the best way to go! 😉 Public transport can really limit your experience in the area.
If you land in Bari, I recommend renting a car right at the airport (you can check out the options here). Start on the SS16 towards Barletta, switch to the SS141 towards Manfredonia, and then just follow the signs straight to Vieste. You’ll have the sea in view on your right for much of the drive.
It should take between 2:30 to 3:00 hours.
By Train
You could, in theory, go by train, but I wouldn’t really recommend it. You’d have to go around the Parco del Gargano and approach Vieste from Peschici.
It should take around 5 hours if you’re lucky.
By Bus
Taking the bus isn’t my top pick either, mainly because you often have to connect through Foggia. Plus, bus services are seasonal, so you really need to pay attention to the schedules.
But if you’re considering this option still, check out the Ferrovia del Gargano and Sita Sud websites for more information.
when to go
To make sure you get the most out of your visit—with most attractions open, including restaurants, lidos, and various transport options—it’s best to plan your trip for June, July, or September.
August tends to be overcrowded, more expensive, and extremely hot.
where to park
In Vieste, your best bet for parking is near the port. It’s a large, organized area and really close to everything in the center of Vieste.
