Figuring out how to make the most of your days in Salento, Puglia, or which beach to pick can be a tough call. Adriatic Coast or Ionian Coast, or maybe a taste of both? No worries, I’m here to help you! Let me share my top spots on both sides of Italy’s boot heel to help you decide.
I’ve pretty much checked out every beach in Salento, more than once โ yeah, tough job, right? ๐
Living in Lecce comes with its perks. Even Santa Maria di Leuca, the furthest tip of Salento, is just an hour’s drive away.
If you’re curious about my favorite spots along the Adriatic Coast, click here. And for those into the Ionian side, just keep reading.
Picking my favorite beaches along the Ionian Coast of Salento, Puglia, was every bit as tough as it was for the Adriatic Coast. After all, the Ionian beaches are as gorgeous and diverse as those on the Adriatic side.
Here you’ll find it all: from wide, white-sand beaches buzzing with lively beach clubs to secluded pebble beaches hidden behind lush forestsโand all the wonders in between.

My Top Picks: Discovering The 4 Best Beaches On Salentoโs Ionian Coast
Continuing our quest for the ultimate beach experience, our next stop takes us to the stunning shores along the Ionian Coast of Salento.
Think of it as a fresh chapter, yet with the same thrilling vibe of our Adriatic Coast adventure. My mission remains the same โ chasing those picture-perfect views and the kind of clear, turquoise waters that are so stunning you don’t even believe it’s real.
Just a little side note about the photos โ theyโve been snapped up with nothing but iPhones. Quite impressive, don’t you think? But let me tell you, these images are simply a sneak peek. You’ve gotta be there to get the full effect.
All the beaches I’ve selected are just a 40 to 60-minute drive from Lecce.
Ready to explore the Ionian coastโs spectacular spots with me? Let’s get this beach journey started! ๐๏ธ๐
Torre Lapillo: A Paradise for Sunbathers and Watersport Enthusiasts
Torre Lapillo is famous for its extensive white sandy beaches that stretch out for around 4 km, with crystal-clear, turquoise waters that create a postcard-perfect scene. It’s a big hit with locals (me included ๐) and visitors alike.
My husband and I absolutely love our beach walks, and Torre Lapillo offers us a lot of perfect sand, so we never run out of beach to explore.

This spot has something for everyone. It is known for its mix of laid-back and decked-out beaches. Whether you’re all about spreading your towel on the sand for a chill day or you fancy the full deal with a sunbed and umbrella at a beach club, you’re all sorted out here.

And, like I’ve probably mentioned before, I’m a big fan of Beach Clubs. Honestly, dealing with beach umbrellas and chairs isnโt my (or my husband’s for that matter) idea of fun. So, we always head straight for our favorite club here, Baia Porto Cesario.
Fun fact: At each end of this beach, youโll find two historic towers. There’s Torre Lapillo, which actually lends its name to the area, and then thereโs the less famous but equally intriguing Torre Chianca nearby.
These towers werenโt just for show. Back in the day, they were part of a massive coastal defense system across Puglia, designed to keep an eye out for and defend against invaders coming from the sea. Puglia was quite the hotspot for unwanted guests, especially from the Ottomans, so these towers were pretty crucial.
Type Of Beach
Most of this stunning beach is sandy, except for a small area of pebbles right by the coastal tower.
Now, let’s talk about the water here at Torre Lapillo. It’s famously clear and clean, which makes it a dream spot for swimming and snorkeling. Plus, the shallow seabed near the shore is perfect for families with kids. You can let them splash around without a worry.

Definitely worth noting, Torre Lapillo is like heaven for anyone into water sports. Youโve got your pick of adventures here, from snorkeling and windsurfing to kitesurfing and paddleboarding. Just pick whatever gets your adrenaline going.
And as the day starts to cool down, the beach livens up with music and events at the Lidos. Perfect for wrapping up an epic day by the water.
Beach Clubs
As I mentioned before, the coastline of Torre Lapillo is peppered with beach clubs, or Lidi, that offer all the essentialsโsunbeds, umbrellas, you name it, plus some cool refreshments to beat the heat. These clubs often spice things up with events and activities, really bringing the beach vibe to life.
Now, if I had to pick a favorite, itโd definitely be Bahia Porto Cesareo. It’s on the fancier side, so yeah, expect to spend a little extra. But trust me, for the experience you get, itโs totally worth the splurge!
The setting couldnโt be better, in a particularly lovely part of the beach. The beach umbrellas and chairs are big and comfy, and they’ve got charm, too.
The service is outstanding, and the restaurant offers great and diverse options – you really can’t go wrong there.
Expect to be pampered! ๐๐น
A few kilometers south of Torre Lapillo, there’s another favorite of mine, Lido Petra in Torre Squillace. Set on a pebbly coast with crystal-clear waters, itโs a fantastic, laid-back beach club with fewer crowdsโperfect for relaxing!
Iโd recommend bringing beach shoes to make getting into the water easier, but once youโre in, it feels like a natural pool.
I love spending the day hereโdrinks, snacks, and a good book under the umbrella, plus a fresh lunch at the bar.
Stick around for the stunning sunset, or swing by later just for sunset drinks and that view! ๐
How To Get To Torre Lapillo โ Location, Accessibility, And Parking
Finding your way to Torre Lapillo is really easy, especially if youโre coming from Lecce. It sits within the Porto Cesareo municipality and is best reached by car.
Youโll want to head out on the SP 119 road, aiming for Santo Cesario. Before you even reach the city, turn right towards Porto Lapillo. Just keep an eye on the signs, and theyโll lead you straight there, no fuss at all.
You’re looking at about a 30-minute drive to get there, traffic permitting. And donโt worry, Google Maps tends to be pretty reliable in that area.
As for parking, there’s public space available on the side streets near the beach. However, booking a parking spot through the Lido youโre visiting is definitely the way to go. It simplifies things a lot compared to figuring out the local parking rules, which are not always easy to understand.
Porto Selvaggio: A Dive into Salentoโs Pristine Natural Park
Porto Selvaggio is a breathtaking natural reserve that truly pulls you straight into the wild beauty of Italy’s coast. Personally, Iโd say itโs one of the most gorgeous beaches in the area and, honestly, in all of Puglia.
But hey, itโs not just about the beach. The nature reserve itself is a must-visit. Even if youโre not planning to take a dip, the place wonโt disappoint.
If you enjoy hiking and trekking with stunning views, you won’t be let down. Check out AllTrails to pick a trail that calls to you, lace up your hiking boots, pack some water and snacks, and have a great time!

And if youโve got a bit of that adventurous spirit, you definitely shouldnโt skip the hike up to Torre dell’Alto, the effort is totally worth it! Once you reach the top, youโll be treated to stunning panoramic views of the Ionian Sea.
Type Of Beach
The main beach, Spiaggia di Porto Selveggio, is a pebble beach surrounded by natural beauty. It is perfect for those looking to dive into some of the clearest waters around without the usual crowd.
Porto Selvaggio is known for its waterโitโs crystal-clear and somewhat cooler, thanks to the freshwater flowing into the bay. Itโs a top spot for snorkeling, where you can spot all sorts of fish and diverse marine life. Plus, it’s got the Blue Flag, so you know it’s clean and well-kept.
Packing beach shoes can really make a difference, especially if you’re planning to spend time in the water. And even for a casual walk, sturdy shoes come in handy, given the tricky rocky terrain.
Taking kids might not be the best idea, though you’ll see plenty of people braver than me doing it without a second thought.
Also, just a heads up: getting to the main beach means a downhill trek of about 1km on pretty natural trails. So, wearing a pair of good shoes is a must for this too.
Beach Clubs
Don’t expect to find beach clubs at Porto Selvaggioโremember, it’s a nature reserve, so amenities are on the minimal side. You’ll come across a couple of spots selling refreshments and snacks, but that’s about it.
It’s wise to bring along water, snacks, and all your beach must-haves, as the whole idea is to keep things as natural as possible.

How To Get To Porto Selvaggio โ Location, Accessibility, And Parking
Reaching Porto Selvaggio by car from Lecce is very easy, just about a 30-minute drive. Stick to the SS101 for most of the journey, then let the signs or your Google Maps guide you the rest of the way.
Given it’s a sprawling nature reserve, you’ll find plenty of parking options thanks to its various entrances. For the shortest stroll to the beach, aim for the Villa Tafuri entrance where parking is super close by.
And if you’re targeting the main beach โ as you really should โ parking at this particular spot is your best bet. Itโs incredibly convenient and starts you right on the path leading straight to the beach.
Just like I pointed out when talking about the best Adriatic beaches, if you’re not driving, no worriesโthe summer Salento in Bus service makes it easy to cross from one coast to the other.
Bus 104 is your go-to for this slice of coast. It’s always a smart move to check their website for the latest updates, as schedules or routes might change.
A little insider tip: if possible, steer clear of Porto Selvaggio in Augustโit’s peak season, and it gets extremely crowded. Regardless of when you go, getting there early is golden advice that holds true for pretty much all beaches in Puglia.

Punta della Suina: Experiencing the Wild Beauty of Salentoโs Coastline
Punta della Suina was highly recommended by my local friends and is something you shouldn’t miss. It’s near Gallipoli, and honestly, it’s breathtaking.
The water here is crystal clear, with that beautiful mix of emerald and turquoise that makes you think of the Caribbean. And the beach itself is this perfect mix of soft sand and scattered rocks, right in the heart of nature.

Just like Porto Selvaggio, Punta della Suina is off the beaten path, hidden behind pine forests with plenty of spots to venture into the water.
It’s a hit for anyone looking for some tranquility surrounded by nature’s beauty. But, just so you’re aware, it’s not always as quiet. Come mid-July through August, it gets pretty packed with locals.
Type Of Beach
Now, Punta della Suina offers a bit of a change-up from Porto Selvaggio. Here, you’ve got areas with soft fine sand perfect for laying out and others with small rocks, giving everyone a spot to chill or explore.
Plus, it’s a tad more equipped in terms of amenities, with a few Beach Clubs for when you need that extra bit of comfort (just how I like it! ๐).
The water is crystal clear and incredibly clean, offering great visibility. This makes it a dream spot for snorkeling enthusiasts or anyone who simply adores exploring the underwater world.

The color of the water turns a vivid turquoise on those perfect sunny days when the wind decides to take a break. And it’s also a Blue Flag beach, so you know itโs really clean and eco-friendly. It really shows!
For the families out there, you’ll be happy to know there’s a cozy little sandy spot just right for the younger ones to play and paddle around.
And if itโs facilities youโre after, check out the Lido I point out nextโit’s the way to go! It’s got everything you need for a comfy beach day.
Beach Clubs
Around here, you’ve got some beach club options, but G-Beach is the standout choice no doubt! After you park at the spot I’ve marked down below, just look for the path right across from where you’ve parked.
That’s the one leading to G-Beachโit’s the Lido shown at the top of the image below, you can’t miss it!

They’ve got excellent facilities and comfy beach chairs. The views of the sea are spectacular, and you’ll get a stunning glimpse of Gallipoli off in the distance. Just a heads upโthis slice of paradise does come with a bit of a price tag.
Careful if you’re heading straight to the ocean thoughโit takes you to a lovely place, but unfortunately, it features a Lido I wouldn’t suggest staying. It can be nice just to walk around or to grab something fast, but it will be more expensive and less comfortable than G-Beach.
Definitely worth a peek if you’re the curious typeโmaybe give it a go. Just make sure to circle back to the parking lot and follow those signs to G-Beach. ๐
In addition to beach clubs, Punta della Suina also has these stretches of public beach you can access through a lovely pine forest. There, youโll find everything you need for a day under the sun, like sunbeds and umbrellas for rent. Plus, there are spots where you can relax and enjoy the beach in a more natural setting.
How To Get To Punta della Suina โ Location, Accessibility, And Parking
Punta della Suina is super easy to get to by car, with plenty of parking right near the beach. To get there from Lecce, just take the SS101 towards Gallipoli. After you pass Gallipoli, follow the signs to Punta Suina. You can count on Google Maps for reliable directions. Youโll be there in roughly 40 minutes.

If you’re not coming by car, no worriesโthere are public transportation options available in the summer.
From Gallipoli or Lecce, you can catch Bus 108 from Salento in Bus. Youโll want to get off at ‘Camping Baia di Gallipoli’, which is the nearest stop. A good tip is to have a quick chat with the bus driver about your drop-off pointโthey’re usually more than happy to alert you when you’re getting close.
However, if you can manage it, driving is your best bet for convenience and flexibility.
Pescoluse: The Stunning ‘Maldives of Italy’
Heading over to Pescoluse, you’ll quickly see why some people call it the ‘Maldives of Salento’. This place is a real show-stopper with its crystal-clear, turquoise waters and fine sand beaches that go on for more than four kilometers along Puglia’s Ionian Coast.
Pescoluse stands out for its exceptional water quality, earning the Blue Flag designation. It is the perfect spot for anyone looking to relax in shallow, calm seas, especially between May and October, when the weather is just right.

The reason Pescoluse made it onto my shortlist is its incredibly beautiful turquoise water and the striking contrast with the sand โ truly a sight to behold! Plus, as I’ve mentioned before, we’re big fans of beach walks, and Pescoluse is just perfect for that.๐ถ๐ปโโ๏ธ
And then, thereโs the dreamy Le Cinque Vele Beach Club e Restaurant. But Iโll circle back to it in a flash, promise! ๐
Type Of Beach
Pescoluse really stands out for its ridiculously clear, transparent water that could easily make you think you’ve landed in a tropical paradise. Plus, it’s regularly awarded the Bandiera Blue, which means it has clean waters and great conditions for swimming and snorkeling.
It’s a fantastic pick for families, thanks to its gentle, shallow waters that are usually pretty calm, making it a safe and fun spot for kids. Plus, the beach has tons of amenities to keep everyone entertained, making it a stress-free beach day!

At the beach clubs, you’ll come across all the essentials, like restrooms and showers. And if you get hungry or thirsty, no sweatโmany beach clubs offer food and drink delivery straight to your spot on the sand.
Beach Clubs
When it comes to beach clubs, Le Cinque Vele Beach Club e Restaurant is no doubt one of the finest and most luxurious ones we’ve ever visited.
It offers a variety of services way beyond the usual beach chair and umbrella rentals.
It’s got a fantastic restaurant and plenty of parking. And their spa services even have a natural sea spa. You can enjoy different spa treatments, including several types of massages, such as shiatsu and deep tissue.
Expect to pay a bit more for the experience though.
But if this is not what you are looking for, no worries at all! Pescoluse is filled with beach clubs for every budget.
Plus, there are plenty of free public spots to enjoy the sun and sea. You’re definitely going to find a place thatโs just right for you!
How To Get To Pescoluse โ Location, Accessibility, And Parking
Getting to Pescoluse is pretty straightforward coming from Lecce. It’s located between Gallipoli and Santa Maria di Leuca, and it should take you around an hour’s drive or so to get there.
I would recommend taking the SS101 towards Gallipoli first, then switching over to the SS274 heading to Salve. Once in Salve, follow the signs pointing you toward Pescoluse and youโll find your way there in no time.

As you get closer to the beach, you’ll notice plenty of parking options. You can either go for private parking spots or pick a space in the Blue Zone, which is the metered parking area. So you’ll find something that fits just right for you!
And if you’re taking up on my tip to stay at the Le Cinque Vele Beach Club, just head straight there. They’ve got a big parking area for guests, so no need to worry about parking at all!

FAQs โ Best Beaches In Salento, Puglia โ Ionian Coast
What is the best base for Salento?
Lecce! Ok, I know I am biased as I live there. Having said that, Lecce, often referred to as the ‘Florence of the South’, is 60 minutes away from any beach on both coasts, Adriatic and Ionian.
Also, it is famous for its Baroque architecture, lively cultural scene, and excellent dining options.
What is the most beautiful sandy beach in Salento?
In Salento, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to beautiful sandy beaches. On the Adriatic side, Mora Mora and Alimini beaches shine with their clear waters and clean sands.
On the other hand, on the Ionian side, Torre Lapillo and Pescoluse stand out for their expansive stretches of soft, golden sand. Each offers a unique beach experience, so your preference might depend on the vibe you’re seeking.
Why is Puglia popular?
Puglia’s charm lies in its untouched Italian essence, stunning landscapes, and rich history. This region is home to vast olive groves, historic towns, and pristine beaches, from the Adriatic’s dramatic cliffs to the Ionian’s inviting sands.
The Gargano area offers spectacular coastlines, the Tremiti Islands Paradise, and the lush Umbra Forest. Puglia’s cuisine, a celebration of freshness, along with its renowned olive oils and wines, delights food enthusiasts.ย
The local hospitality further enhances its appeal. From Lecce’s baroque beauty to Alberobello’s trulli and serene villages, Puglia invites exploration beyond the conventional, offering a deeply authentic Italian experience.
