In my journeys in Salento, Puglia, I always try to find unique, local, family-run places to enjoy great traditional food. L’Orecchietta is one of these rare finds.Β
The entire family works there and has played a key role in growing the business to where it is today. And when I refer to it as a family-run business, that’s exactly what I mean.
Lisetta and Antonio are the foundation of their family, along with their daughter and son, Simona and Mino. Together with the rest of the hardworking team, each member has their own responsibility, contributing to a unique local dining experience.
Located 25 kilometers from Lecce in the small city of Guagnano, it was a surprising find for my husband and me.

We were coming back to Lecce at lunchtime after a trip to the nearby city of Manduria (yes, the homeland of the Primitivo di Manduria wine, or Zinfandel in its Californian version).
We looked at the possible options along the way but did not find many. Then we spotted L’Orecchietta.

We didn’t know what to expect but saw its great reviews, so we decided to give it a try. Best decision ever!
Ever since that first visit, we’ve been back several times and still can’t get over the craving to return. My husband actually would rather go there every day, which is a bit insulting to me now that I think about it. π
What is L’Orecchietta?
L’Orecchietta was originally a Pastificio (Pasta Shop/Factory) that evolved into a sort of full-fledged casual dining buffet around 1991. They produce their own pasta and source most of the ingredients themselves or close by, the quintessential kilometer-zero concept.
They have a cozy indoor seating area and an outdoor patio for those who prefer to savor their meal outdoors.
Also, they offer a good selection of local wines, all sourced by Mino himself, who is also a sommelier.

Recently, they’ve begun offering two lodging options nearby, Corte dei Furesi and Nonna Nina.
If you’d like to stay somewhere conveniently situated between the Adriatic and Ionian beaches, with the bonus of being very near Lecce, these accommodations could be perfect for you.
Plus, you’ll be treated to a fantastic, fresh breakfast every morning!
The experience at L’Orecchietta
As you walk in, the first thing you’ll notice is the enticing blend of aromas and vibrant colors of the buffet, which showcases a wide variety of food choices.
You will also typically see a small crowd placing takeout orders.
It is noteworthy how so many residents from Guagnano and nearby cities prefer to pick up their meals here, which stands out in a culture where Italians generally enjoy home cooking.

In addition, they cater to the six nearby wineries (cantine in Italian) and other establishments.

As you see, I am not alone in recommending L’Orecchietta. If you have a chance, drop by for a terrific foodie experience β you will not regret it!

L’Orecchietta is open every day except Mondays, from 8:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00. Special hours on Thursdays and Sundays, from 8:00 to 13:00.
Since opening times may differ, it’s wise to phone ahead to double-check and to book a table to ensure you have a spot.

The Food at L’Orecchietta
Since the meals are always fresh and locally sourced, what they serve depends on the time of the year. You can count on delicious homemade different types of traditional local pasta like Sagne βncannulate, Orecchiette and many others, together with locally sourced meat and fresh fish.
Also, expect a wide variety of traditional zero-kilometer vegetables and a selection of freshly baked cakes and desserts.
How to get to L’Orecchietta
From Lecce, a regional train ride will get you there in around 30 minutes. By car, the journey should take about the same amount of time.
