The Tremiti Islands always struck me as a bit of a mystery.

None of my friends around Puglia, except the ones from Gargano, have ever been there, even though they all agree it sounds amazing.

And here’s the thing—if these islands are that awesome, why haven’t they made it into the Puglia’s popular travel circuits? I mean, I don’t have the answer, but honestly, I’m not too bothered by it.

It’s actually kind of nice having this slice of paradise pretty much to ourselves! 🤩

This is good news for you, too! This place is magical, peaceful, and incredibly beautiful. Let’s enjoy it before everyone else figures it out!

Explore the Unspoiled Beauty of Italy’s Secret Archipelago

The Tremiti Islands, found in the Adriatic Sea north of the Gargano Peninsula, are a beautiful and unique archipelago part of the Gargano National Park in Italy’s Apulia region. An easy trip from Vieste or Peschici.

This group of islands is a mix of unique characters and fascinating stories:

1. San Domino takes the lead as the most tourist-friendly island, featuring the rare sandy beaches of the Tremiti Archipelago. It’s also a haven of lush greenery and offers some of the best scenic walking paths around.
2. San Nicola where history takes center stage with an ancient monastery. It’s also where many who work in the islands’ tourism industry have set up shop, adding a lively community feel to the historic backdrop.
3. Capraia, close to San Nicola, is now deserted with its rough landscapes.
4. Cretaccio is an uninhabited island very close to San Domino and San Nicola.
5. Pianosa is the smallest and furthest out, occasionally disappearing under the waves during fierce storms.

Why Visit Tremiti Islands?

The answer’s pretty clear: they’re a natural paradise at its absolute best!

Here you’ll find stunning coastal views, inviting swimming spots, and some of the best snorkeling and diving areas around. But that’s not all—there are plenty more surprises waiting for you!

Natural Beauty

The islands are surrounded by crystal-clear waters, a true paradise for snorkelers and marine life enthusiasts, who will absolutely love diving into the diversity of sea creatures and coral formations.

The rugged coastline, with its dramatic cliffs and secluded coves, adds to the islands’ wild charm and offers stunning views at every turn.

For those of you into hiking, the islands are packed with trails of every kind. You can wander through pine forests, tackle some hills, and get those awesome ocean views that’ll make you stop and stare. Whether you’re up for an easy stroll or a bit of a challenge, there’s a path for you!

Plus, there are spots along the way where you can kick back and snack with a view.

Historical Significance

Diomedee and the Trojan War

The legend of Diomedes and the Tremiti Islands is deeply rooted in Greek mythology and local folklore. According to the myth, the hero Diomedes, who fought in the Trojan War, was involved in the creation of the islands.

After the war, Diomedes left his homeland. Discovering a conspiracy against him, he wandered the sea and eventually settled on the coast of Gargano.

He married the daughter of King Daunos and created a new life for himself in this region. Legend even says the islands themselves were made by Diomedes, using stones.

After his death, the goddess Venus transformed his companions into these birds called diomedee, or albatrosses. Now they soar above the islands forever, keeping watch over Diomedes’ final resting place.

Alessio Giannone, also known as Pinuccio, tells the story beautifully. You also get to enjoy the scenery, making it a must-watch for any Tremiti Islands fan.

If you’re worried about understanding it, don’t be. There are English subtitles available—thank goodness, because even I get tripped up by some of the local dialect! 😂

Julia the Younger

Much more recently, the islands served as the place of exile for Julia the Younger, no less than the granddaughter of Emperor Augustus. She was sent here around 8 AD until her death, 20 years later.

But Julia’s story was just the beginning of the islands’ long history as a place of confinement and exile.

Fast-forward through history, the Tremiti Islands were also used for lockup during both the Napoleonic era and under Fascism.

Lucio Dalla

Alright, if you’re from Italy, feel free to jump ahead — you already know it! Lucio Dalla, one of Italy’s most beloved singer-songwriters, had a special connection to the Tremiti Islands. This place not only captured his heart but also inspired his creativity like nowhere else.

Famous for his soulful music and poetic lyrics, Dalla chose these quiet and stunning islands as a retreat, an escape away from the bustling world, where he could find peace and muse for his songs.

Tranquility and Seclusion

Now, unlike the usual tourist hotspots around Italy that are crowded all year round, the Tremiti Islands are peaceful—well, except in August.

But generally, their off-the-beaten-path location is just what you need if you’re looking for a break from the crowds. Around here, what you mainly hear are the calming sounds of waves and a light breeze.

The Tremiti Islands are a treat for active travelers and nature lovers!

They have tons of fun activities to fit your exploring style, whether you seek adventure or just want to take in the beauty.

Go Snorkeling and Diving

The crystal-clear waters around the Tremiti Islands are a snorkeler’s and scuba diver’s paradise.

Expect an unforgettable underwater experience exploring spots like Architiello di San Domino, La Nave, and Cala degli Inglesi. 🤿

Teeming with colorful marine life and fascinating rock formations, these secret spots will leave you breathless!

Hidden between Capraia and San Nicola islands, you’ll find a surprise – a statue of Saint Padre Pio!

Right at San Domino’s cute little port, you’ll find many dive shops ready to sort you out with all your diving needs.

Lounge on a beach chair under the sun on The Tremiti Islands

While the Tremiti Islands aren’t exactly known for endless sandy beaches (it’s more like hidden coves and rocky shores), they still have amazing spots to soak up the sun.

Cala delle Arene is the main beach. You can’t miss it as you get close to San Domino, with all the umbrellas popping out. It’s got all the amenities you’d expect, but it isn’t exactly my top pick. There’s a secret spot that’s way better!

The spot I’m all about? Cala Matano. This little slice of sandy paradise is exactly what you’re looking for!

There’s a cozy Lido there, handling all the beach chair and umbrella needs you might have. It’s the kind of place you settle into and forget the time, just enjoying the sun in a more low-key setting.

Cala Matano does come with a bit of a price tag for the beach chair and umbrella rentals. But think of it as an investment in relaxation!

Plus, this is the same beach area where you’ll find the legendary Lucio Dalla’s house! How cool is that?

Join a Boat Tour

It’s the best way to truly appreciate the beauty of the Tremiti Islands and get your bearings for further adventures.

These tours offer a whole new perspective, letting you admire the stunning cliffs from the sea and discover hidden coves you can’t reach by land.

The boat tour options are as varied as the islands themselves! From luxurious private cruises to budget-friendly group tours, there’s something for everyone.

My pro tip? Join a tour around the island as soon as you arrive. It’ll give you a taste of everything the Tremiti Islands have to offer, helping you map out your land and sea adventures for the rest of your trip.

Rent a private boat

Renting a private boat is my go-to activity on the Tremiti Islands, no doubt! Nothing like dipping into crystal-clear coves unknown to most tourists, or snorkeling in secret underwater paradises – all at your own pace! 🚤

A private boat allows you to be your own captain, exploring secret spots, avoiding the crowds, and enjoying the natural beauty of these islands intimately.

The best part? You don’t need a special license to operate these boats, as long as you stay within the designated area.

Snorkel in hidden coves, try your luck at fishing, or simply cruise along the stunning coastlines – it’s all up to you!

Finding a boat rental is really easy and convenient. Head over to San Domino’s port, where you’ll find tons of options.

Also, your hotel might have some insider recommendations on the best rentals, so don’t hesitate to ask!

Hiking

The Tremiti Islands offer much more than water adventures. Lace up your hiking boots and explore the network of trails across San Domino. 🥾 These paths will lead you to spectacular panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea – get ready to be speechless!

Plus, you’ll get a chance to immerse yourself in the lush island vegetation and spot some local wildlife.

Even better – these trails are well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels, so all you need to worry about is enjoying the scenery!

Going around the island took us around 3 hours at a leisurely pace. It’s a really peaceful way to connect with nature and enjoy the serene beauty of the islands.

Explore San Nicola

Beyond the crystal-clear waters, the Tremiti Islands hold a rich history, from ancient monastic settlements to their use as an exile destination during Fascist Italy.

San Nicola Island hides a fascinating story within the walls of the Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare.

Built around the 9th century, the Abbey wasn’t always dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Originally honoring Saint James the Greater, the Abbey became associated with the Virgin Mary by the 11th century.

Legend has it that a monk named Nicolò is buried here, and disturbing his remains is said to unleash fierce storms, forever binding him to the island.

Enjoy the peace of San Domino eating well!

I have to admit – this was definitely one of my favorite activities on the islands! 😋

Whatever you do, don’t miss the chance to grab a table at A’ Smerza, right on Cale Spido. They serve up delicious fresh seafood dishes and local specialties—all with the most fantastic service and some of the best views of San Domino Island.

I practically lived there for lunch and let me tell you, happy girl indeed!

Also, try the pizzas from La Fenice. They are very good, and they have other interesting options too, all in a nice setting.

Practical Tips for Visiting the Tremiti Islands

Getting to the Tremiti Islands

The Tremiti Islands are primarily accessible by ferry from several ports in Puglia, such as Rodi Garganico, Peschici and Vieste.

A return ticket costs around €45, depending on where you depart from, and the service for non-residents typically starts in June.

The crossing is quite pleasant. Depending on the departure point and the type of ferry used, it takes from one hour to a little short of two hours from Peschici, which is the choice I made last time.

It usually arrives and leaves from San Nicola. If you’re staying in San Domino, which is most likely, you can simply hop on one of the numerous boats making the very short crossing without needing to book or worry about it.

At San Domino, the walk downtown takes about 20 minutes, but the first part includes a steep ramp, so it’s best to pack lightly. Taxis are scarce. The Kyrie Hotel, however, is just a 10-minute walk and offers a transfer service. Just be sure to arrange it beforehand.

You can also take a helicopter from Foggia directly to San Domino. It takes about 20 minutes.

The cost isn’t too steep, around €30 each way until June 14 and approximately €60 each way during the high season. Addition fees may apply. Check the company, Alidaunia, for booking and additional details.

Vehicles are only allowed on the islands of San Domino and San Nicolo, and even there, they are mainly for residents.

Walking and taxi boats or rental boats are, by far, the best ways to explore the islands​​.

Best Times to Visit the Tremiti Islands

The Tremiti Islands offer a delightful escape year-round, but the prime season for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying the crystal-clear waters with warm to hot weather is between early June and mid-September.

However, be aware that late July and August are peak tourist months, so expect crowds and potentially higher prices.

Where to Stay at the Tremiti Islands

Now, when it comes to finding a place to stay, you have few options overall on the islands and even fewer luxurious ones. This is a place to embrace simplicity at its core – charming, comfortable places with all the essentials for a relaxing stay.

Having said that, I recommend staying in San Domino as you’ll have the most activities and restaurants right at your doorstep. You can – and really should! – visit San Nicola by taking a very fast boat. There are plenty of ferries available throughout the day, making island hopping super easy.

I personally stayed at Hotel Kyrie Isole Tremiti, and while the rooms could use a bit of an update, it was a perfectly comfortable place to rest my head after a day of exploring.

The location is very convenient, right in San Domino, so you can easily pop back into your room after a swim or explore the town in the evening. The breakfast buffet is delicious, with plenty of fresh options to fuel your adventures, and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Plus, considering all the amazing things to see and do on the island, who needs a fancy room anyway, right?

I would definitely stay there again! 😊

• Comfortable Walking Shoes – For exploring the islands’ uneven landscapes and historical landmarks.
• Sun Protection Gear (hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen) – Essential to safeguard against the strong sun.
• Lightweight Clothing – Choose breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, perfect to the Mediterranean climate.
• Snorkeling Equipment – The clear waters offer fantastic opportunities for snorkeling.
• Beach Towel – Some accommodations provide them, but bringing your own is safer.
• Reusable Water Bottle – Stay hydrated and eco-friendly.
• Backpack – This is your trusty companion for day trips, hikes, and carrying all your island essentials.
• Chargers and Power Bank – Ensure your devices stay charged, especially when out exploring.
• Mosquito Repellant – Essential during summer evenings.
• Beach Shoes/Water Shoes – The shores of the Tremiti Islands can be rocky and uneven. It is also safer to enter the waters on a rocky shore.
